Please HELP our son!

Nicolas L. is 23 years old, living in Lebanon and has been suffering from the severe metabolic disease Glycogenosis Type 1 since he was born.

Many times he had been taken to the intensive care unit of Beirut's university hospital for serious metabolic disorders, Dyspnoe, and infections. Sometimes he stayed there for months.

Fatal complications in May 2009 did make reanimation and intubation necessary.

Now he is unable to perform activities of daily living like walking, grasping, and even speaking.

Glycogenosis Type 1 is a non-curable disease, which requires e.g. a strict diet plan (constant food and medications intake). Despite all preventive measures complications can arise easily (mainly metabolic disorders and infections). This happened to Nicolas for several times. In May 2009 his situation worsened seriously by vascular collapsing, shortness of breath, fever, renal and hepatic failure and paralysis of all four extremities. Being near to death, he had to get reanimation and intubation.

But Nicolas did not give up and started fighting again. After six weeks in the intensive care unit and another three weeks in the unit for internal medicine, his family could take him home again in July. Nevertheless, he is still suffering from severe neurological after-effects, and paralysis of both his arms and legs (quadriplegia). So his struggle goes on.

Besides innumerable drugs (monthly costs: 550 USD) he needs weekly physiotherapy and psychological assistance (monthly costs: 500 USD). His doctor recommends this to be continued for months or even years to hopefully get the paralysis improved.

Nicolas´ family is on his side but is no longer able to raise the money. There is nothing left of tangible goods they could sell and no health insurance existing.
